LA Rams GM Says Matthew Stafford is a Long-Term Acquisition

The LA Rams made a big trade to start the offseason. The Rams received Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions in exchange for multiple draft picks and Jared Goff.

The move was a bold one, indicating that they were ready to capitalize on their strong roster. And it appears that Goff is a long-term option for the Rams, rather than a short-term option.

LA Rams General Manager Les Snead gave an interview to The Athletic. When asked about their plans with Matthew Stafford, Snead noted that they are looking at keeping him around for a long time.

Despite him being 33 years of age, the franchise believes that Stafford can be their starting quarterback for the next several years, pointing to Drew Brees as a great example of the same.

“I don’t think we did it thinking two years. Based on his age, you can legitimately think five to seven, eight years if you look at what Drew (Brees) has done.

With quarterbacks of his pedigree, a lot of those guys have played into their late 30s, for sure. So that was definitely the vision with (Stafford).”

The admission comes as no surprise. Stafford has been one of the most underrated quarterbacks in recent memory. After entering the NFL in 2009, Stafford suffered a shoulder injury in just his second season.

The injury was quite severe, forcing Stafford to get surgery and sit out the rest of his sophomore season with the Detroit Lions. There were doubts if Stafford’s career was shortened by the injury.

However, Stafford returned the next season and quashed all those concerns. He had an excellent season with the Lions, and for his efforts, was rewarded with a wild card spot in that year’s Playoffs. However, they fell against the New Orleans Saints.

But for his contributions, Stafford was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Since then, he’s gone on to become a Pro-Bowl quarterback but hasn’t had the chance to shine with the Lions.

Will Matthew Stafford find success in LA? The franchise has backed him and believes that he is the missing piece for them to find success in the Playoffs going forward.

However, he does have a challenging road ahead of him, fitting into a new system after playing with the Lions.
