“Needs a coach like Bill Belichick” – Stephen Smith Gives His Two Cents On Cam Newton, Tom Brady

Cam Newton has the challenging task of replacing NFL great Tom Brady in New England after everything that’s gone by in 2020. Brady’s departure to Tampa Bay, Cam’s exit from Carolina Panthers set off a chain of events. Newton was signed on a one-year deal after head coach Bill Belichick’s approval.

But is he in the right position to replace someone like TB12?

Coach Belichick says yes. The six-time Super Bowl-winning coach has been praising Newton’s dedication ever since preseason began in July. But could that be Belichick’s way of taking shots at his former protege? A certain popular sportscaster thinks so.

In the recent installment of ESPN First Take, Stephen A. Smith, Max Kellerman, and Marcus Spears weighed in on coach Belichick’s recent comments surrounding fresh recruit – Cam Newton. Here’s what Smith had to say about Newton’s prospects in New England this season with a slight dig at Belichick’s treatment of former player Tom Brady.

“I don’t cover the New England Patriots, I don’t know Bill Belichick personally, don’t speak to him or anything like that. I’m definitely coming from an outsider just looking at it. Every time I hear him speak so glowingly about Cam, all I can think about is ‘what are you trying to say about Brady?’

“You talking about competitiveness…six Super Bowl championships, nine trips…16 or 17 AFC East crowns in his 19 years there. I mean what the hell are we talking about here? I’m appreciative of the fact that he is saying about Cam because Cam is at a point in his career where he needs this desperately, he needs a coach like Bill Belichick,” Smith said on the show.
