New York Jets Make Three Big Moves to Accomodate Costliest QB Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets seem intent to bring Aaron Rodgers to the MetLife Stadium for the 2023 season. Rodgers looks set to move away from the Green Bay Packers after 18 seasons in Wisconsin and the Jets are leading the race. But before the move can materialize, they need to move some blocks. The Jets have made three big moves to accommodate what is surely going to be the costliest deal by some distance.

Rodgers hasn’t publicly said anything about the deal, but a lot has happened behind the scenes. And everything seems to be falling into place now.

The Jets have cleared some space to accommodate Aaron Rodgers in their salary cap. For that, they have restructured the deal of three players to free up their cap space for 2023. According to NFL insider Field Yates, the franchise has restructured the contracts of guard Laken Tomlinson, cornerback DJ Reed, and tight end Tyler Conklin to free up $15.2 million in cap space.

Apart from the three latest moves, the Jets have also converted a big part of TE CJ Uzomah’s salary in bonuses to do the same thing. So, they are Rodgers’ most likely destination. In fact, MetLife Stadium might just be getting ready for a huge reception of the future Hall of Famer soon.

Rodgers has indicated since the end of the season that he may not return to Lambeau Field. And now even the Packers CEO Mark Murphy all but confirmed it. So, it is natural for the fans to see some movement in the market. So what does the future look like for all the parties?

Aaron Rodgers has played for the Packers for the last 18 seasons. But it looks like the end of the road for both parties. The Packers will get significant draft capital to plan a future without the four-time MVP. And it will also free up a lot of cap space. They look set to give the starting job to QB2 Jordan Love.

The Jets are starved for success on the field. Their experiment with QB Zach Wilson did not bear fruit. So they are going all in for 39-year-old Rodgers to get them some short-term success. And Rodgers too will be raring to go for a second Super Bowl ring. Something he last won in 2011, just a year before the Jets last lifted the Vince Lombardi trophy.

All in all, it will be a win-win for all if this deal goes through. But will all the plans fall into place?
