The 2020 NFL season was a tough watch for the Bill Belichick-coached New England Patriots and their massive fanbase. The 6-time Super Bowl winners were playing without Tom Brady for the first time in 2 decades.

With Cam Newton as their starter, the Patriots concluded their 2020 NFL campaign 3rd in the AFC East with a 7-9 record.

Apart from Brady, the Patriots missed a big chunk of their defensive stars who opted out due to the COVID-19 crisis. Another star player who missed out on the majority of the season was their veteran wide receiver, Julian Edelman.

The 34-year-old wideout featured in 6 games last season. On 21 receptions, Edelman registered 315 receiving yards with no touchdowns.

He underwent minor knee surgery and coach Belichick opted against activating him from the injured reserve list for the latter half of the season.

So what lies ahead for the Super Bowl LII MVP? Is this the end of the road for the once-feared NFL wideout?

Here’s an interesting theory put forth by former NFL Executive Mike Tannenbaum on Tuesday’s episode of ESPN’s Get Up. The former Miami Dolphins VP claimed that Julian Edelman is probably on his way out of New England. His next potential destination? The Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He said, “Yesterday the New England Patriots signed two receivers, Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor. When you combine last year, they played 455 snaps in the slot.

“So who’s expendable? Julian Edelman. Where do aging, retired players go? They go south of Florida, Greeny.

Tom Brady – Julian Edelman, when we connect the dots, it makes a lot of sense. Antonio Brown wasn’t re-signed, Edelman is now expendable.

“It’s another ex-patriot going to Tampa Bay with Tom Brady, it makes a lot of sense to me if you connect the dots,” Tannenbaum said on the show.

The Buccaneers already have some fast-paced wide receivers in the form of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Scott Miller, and Tyler Johnson.

A proven champion like Julian Edelman could help bolster their squad depth as they gear up to defend their Super Bowl title in 2021. However, the Bucs will have to choose between Edelman and Antonio Brown.

Brady’s on-field chemistry with Edelman could serve as a major factor for any potential trade deal. But the latter signed a 2-year extension with New England last year itself.
