The NFL 2022 Draft came and went, but the New Orleans Saints’ defense still has significant weaknesses. However, Saints were unable to provide aid at the safety position despite even completing five choices. The 2022 NFL Draft is already over. However, the franchise may make an effort for a free agent safety athlete.

Undrafted rookie top prospect acquisitions of the New Orleans Saints were intriguing. Those defensive backs are far from certain to make the team, let alone get significant playing time. With the draft completed, free agency will again be a thriving business for sure.

Tyrann Mathieu and the Saints have already met. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he expects the team to restart its recruitment of the Pro Bowl safety now that the draft is over. With Malcolm Jenkins’ departure and Marcus Williams’ joining the Ravens, both of New Orleans’ elite safety athletes exited this summer. After failing to add some safety to the line-up, they could make a much more “active effort” to get the ex-Kansas City ace.

The Saints added veteran safety Marcus Maye as one replacement. However, when asked if there were any “Musts” to stay on their squad, GM Mickey Loomis told ESPN on Saturday, “Yeah. One of them, for sure. You guys can guess that. You probably know it already.”

The 4x All-Pro has been one of Chiefs’ most reliable players over the last three years, making him the most effective veterans. He was born and raised in New Orleans. If the Saints consented, he’d be an outstanding player, but with a lesser rate than envisioned after exploring the market.

Tyrann’s arrival to a defensive backfield that already contains CJ Gardner-Johnson and PJ Williams might help them improve their pass protection tactics. And we don’t have to wait long for this to happen. The Saints have plenty of salary room and, given their lack of draft activity, they could make a serious approach to Tyrann Mathieu.
