The Washington Football Team has recently changed its name to Washington Commanders. And with that, the franchise has now dodged itself from all the mocking that they have received for being nameless for the past two seasons.

The franchise adopted the moniker WFT before the 2020 season. Critics targeted the team’s name for years, because of its racist roots to the Native Americans. Owner Dan Snyder, who ardently refused to change the name of the franchise, had to back down in his stance and has since been named Washington Football Team until now.

The franchise in January revealed its upcoming announcement of a new name in February. The team announced the name “Commanders” as their new moniker. There were a few popular names that were suggested to Snyder; Admirals, Armada, Brigade, Sentinels, Defenders, Red Hogs, and Presidents. However, the most popular one was the RedWolves, which was scrapped off since its trademark was owned by another organization.

According to FOX News, with this new name, owner Snyder makes the team pay “homage to our local roots and what it means to represent the nation’s capital.”

“As we kick off our 90th season, it is important for our organization and fans to pay tribute to our past traditions, history, legacy and the greats that came before us,” he added. And with that, Snyder clarified that the name chosen is of great historical and cultural value.
