Mike McCarthy began his coaching career way back in 1987. He started off as a graduate assistant at Fort Hays State between 1987 to 1988. Following that, he began his NFL coaching career by signing on as an offensive quality control coach in 1993. Fast forward to five years later and McCarthy (who got promoted to quarterback coach) left the Chiefs to coach the Green Bay Packers.

Since then McCarthy has spent time with the New Orleans Saints, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Packers once again (between 2006-2018). After a one-year hiatus, he was named as the new Dallas Cowboys head coach ahead of the 2020 season.

The Cowboys are being tipped for a deep playoff run this season, possibly even a Super Bowl appearance. They boast one of the best offensive teams in the league. With stars like Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and CeeDee Lamb on the roster, McCarthy has great expectations from his new team.

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy highlights his team’s goal this season

Head coach McCarthy gave an extensive interview to the team’s official website earlier this week. Here’s what he had to say about the team’s preparations heading into a crucial 2020 NFL season.

“If you’re not trying to win a Super Bowl, I don’t know what you’re even doing in this business. I think that’s what every team starts their offseason with. The ones that don’t talk about it are probably trying to under-promise, overachieve. But I’ve always been very upfront about it with every team I’ve ever coached. We’re in this to win a championship, make no bones about it,” McCarthy told the team’s official website.

“The schedule is what it is. I’m not a big fan of that statement, but we’re all in a pandemic. Every coach is coaching in this training camp environment. The players are doing a great job with the COVID challenge.

“It’s going to be a long, long year. It’s going to be a huge challenge to get that championship. That’s the reality of it. But at the end of the day, we’re on Install 6, and we’ve got a lot of work to do,” McCarthy added.
