Justin Herbert is enjoying life in the NFL at the moment. An unforeseen injury to the first-choice quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, in Week Two gave Herbert the opportunity to make his league debut. And he certainly did not disappoint.

Herbert threw for 311 yards with 1 touchdown, yet he could not prevent a loss against the Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs.

Since then, the former University of Oregon player has started in every game for the Chargers. However, Herbert is yet to win an NFL clash as a starter.

Last weekend, the promising rookie had arguably his best outing with the Chargers in 2020. The Chargers QB threw for 264 yards with 4 passing TDs against Drew Brees’ New Orleans Saints.

It is interesting to note that his outing against the Saints etched his name in the history books as the youngest quarterback in NFL history to throw 4 touchdowns in a Monday night clash.

His rising trajectory has seen his name being included in multiple Offensive Rookie of the Year debates. Will Justin Herbert live up to expectations in the coming months?

Apart from the Chargers shot-caller, Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow is also being touted as a potential contender for the Rookie of the Year award. Burrow has thrown for 1,100 yards with 6 passing TDs against 2 interceptions across 5 games.

Joe’s former LSU teammate, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, is also having a fine season with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020. In addition to these two, Dallas Cowboys’ wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, Denver Broncos’ wideout Jerry Jeudy, and the Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson are in the running to bag the coveted ROTY award.

However, Justin Herbert could comfortably eclipse his competitors if he continues to play at his current level. Herbert has thrown for 1,195 yards across 4 games this season.

Chargers’ Head Coach, Anthony Lynn, is adamant that Taylor remains the first-choice for Los Angeles despite Herbert’s emergence.

If Tyrod returns to the starting line-up, Herbert will be forced to the sidelines. This could significantly reduce his chances of winning the ROTY honor.

But if the Chargers #10 puts in one or two performances similar to that of his Week Five cameo against the Saints, coach Lynn might just change his mind?
