Italian Open 2019: Nick Kyrgios Fined With A Hefty Amount

Nick Kyrgios has been handed an extortionate fine for his unsportsmanlike conduct at the Italian Open 2019. The Australian has been fined with a hefty amount of €20,000 for his three violations of the code of conduct during the match.

While Nick Kyrgios will also give up his prize money earned in the event, which amounts to €33,636. The 24-year-old will also cover the cost of his hospitality the tournament. The world no. 36 will also forfeit the 45 ATP points that he earned during the Italian Open 2019.

The breakdown of the penalties incurred by Nick Kyrgios is as follows:

• Warning for ball abuse.
• €5,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct for which he was penalised with a point.
• €7,500 fine for another unsportsmanlike conduct for which he was penalised with a game.
• €7,500 for defaulting from the match.

Nick Kyrgios was handed over with three warnings for the violations of the code of conduct during his second round match against Casper Ruud at the Italian Open 2019. The Australian first received a warning for ball abuse after he lost a point on his serve, was docked a point for unsportsmanlike conduct. Nick Kyrgios was penalised with a game for more unsportsmanlike conduct.

This prompted the frustrated Australian as he smashed his racket into the clay and also kicked the water bottle. He didn’t stop there as he furiously tossed up the folded chair to the centre of the court.

He then packed up his bag and started to shake hand with the umpire and his opponent and started to walk off the court to default from the match.

It turned out after the match that Nick Kyrgios didn’t unambiguously walk off the court after hurling the chair on the court. However, he had already been told by the supervisor Gerry Armstrong that he was being defaulted when he packed up his bag and left.

The American journalist Christopher Clarey had confirmed that ATP has fined Nick Kyrgios with €20,000. He wrote on Twitter, “ATP confirms that Kyrgios indeed defaulted from match vs Ruud
20,000 Euro total fine and forfeit of points and prize money from Rome.”

He was fined for his negative remarks towards Stan Wawrinka during the Rogers Cup 2015. In the following year, Kyrgios was suspended for eight weeks following a verbal clash with a spectator and an effortless match against Mischa Zverev at the Shanghai Masters. Kyrgios also received an additional $25,000 fine with eight weeks suspension.

It will be interesting to see whether Kyrgios would be suspended following his latest outburst at the Italian Open 2019.
