Novak Djokovic Out of Rogers Cup 2019

World Number one, Novak Djokovic has had a thriving season so far. The Serb has been victorious at Australian Open, later followed by a teetering run at ‘American Swing’, Djokovic pulled off the Madrid Masters title. He went on to defend his Wimbledon crown in London in an epic match against the Swiss, Roger Federer in the finals. 

The four-time titlist at the Candian Masters, Novak Djokovic steps down from the Rogers Cup tournament. The Serb prefers to give his body some more rest before he begins his US Open Series. Novak Djokovic hopes to step on the Flushing Meadows courts with a near-perfect form in tennis. 

“I’m sorry to announce that I decided to pull out of Rogers Cup,” Djokovic said. “With the support of my team, I have decided to give my body longer rest and recovery time before coming back again to play. I love Canada and I have many friends there that always make me feel like I’m at home and I’m looking forward to coming back again to play in front of all of you in Montreal.”

With Djokovic’s withdrawal, World Number two, Rafael Nadal will be the top seed at the Canada Masters and last year, Nadal defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals. This year, Nadal will be defending the title for the fifth time in Canada and Rafa will be hitting the practice courts of IGA Stadium this Friday. Also, Roger Federer announced his withdrawal from the Montreal Masters right after his defeat at Wimbledon.

“We would have loved for Djokovic to have the chance to be crowned champion for the third time in Montreal, but we understand his decision and we wish him a quick return for the rest of the season,” stated Eugene Lapierre, Tournament Director of the Rogers Cup in Montreal. Last year, Djokovic’s run at Roger Cup was halted by Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16.

The 2009 Rogers Cup finalist, Juan Martin del Potro, will be absent from the Canada Masters this year as he underwent knee surgery in Barcelona in the month of June. Del Potro will be taking some time to recover from his surgery and hence will be away from the ATP circuit for a few months.

“In Del Potro’s case, we wish him a speedy recovery, he who has experienced his share of injuries in the past few years. We look forward to seeing him back on the court in the near future,” the tournament director added.

Rogers Cup is scheduled to get underway on August 3, 2019.
