Novak Djokovic Suggests for a WTA Version of ATP Cup

Novak Djokovic believes a similar format like ATP Cup for the WTA Tour will be beneficial for his female counterparts. However, with some initial glitches in the inaugural event, why does the Serbian believe the possibility of having a women version of the ATP Cup?

There has been criticism of the ATP Cup being played on the premier stadium while the WTA tournament – Brisbane International held at the outdoor courts in the early rounds. Furthermore, there are no current plans of having a WTA tournament similar to the 24-nation event. However, Djokovic supports the idea of women players have a similar tournament as it would benefit the WTA Tour.

“I think it would make sense”: Novak Djokovic

This kind of format is something that would, I think, bring benefits as well and kind of positive outcomes for the WTA tour, that’s my opinion,” said Djokovic in an interview in Brisbane.

The Serb suggested that he does not have the numbers and how will it affect their schedule? However, he proposed that it would make sense as the ATP Cup is being played in Australia and the WTA tour is also held in Brisbane and Auckland. Most of the top players from the female side are in Australia, already. So the 32-year-old thinks it would make sense.

The 16-time grand slam champion has hailed the inaugural ATP Cup 2020 after guiding Serbia to the quarter-finals. Djokovic eased past through Christian Garin, during his country’s 2-1 victory over Chile on Wednesday. Dusan Lajovic then closed the tie for Serbia after defeating Nicolas Jarry.

He is yet to lose a match in the 24-team competition. He won three singles matches and one doubles in the round-robin. The Djokovic-lead Serbian team will play their quarter-final match on Friday in Sydney.
