Manchester United go into further dismay as two of their star players are set to miss the all important clash against Liverpool on Sunday as action resumes in the Premier League after an international break. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that Paul Pogba and David de Gea aren’t fit for the fixture.

Spanish goalkeeper de Gea was injured while representing his country against Sweden in the Euro qualifiers.

“David needs a scan,” United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “I think he’ll be out. It certainly looked like it anyway judging on last night so it’s just one of those things.”

Meanwhile, Pogba has been sidelined for five of United’s last seven games with an ankle issue. He has spent a part of the international break rehabilitating, but the United manager confirmed the Frenchman won’t be available on Sunday.

“Paul had an injury, he came back, he worked really hard. He came back and played a couple of games, maybe played through the pain barrier,” Solskjaer said. “He had a scan after the Arsenal game and maybe needed a few weeks’ rest in a boot so hopefully he won’t be too long, but he won’t make this game, no.”

However, United have some pleasing news as well with Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka expected to return from their respective injuries.

While each of them might not be fit to feature for the full 90 minutes, Solskjaer confirmed that they would be available for at least a part of the game.

“I can’t tell you 100 per cent [who] is going to be fit as something might happen,” he said. “But hopefully Aaron and Anthony will last the training this week and be available for selection. If it’s for half a game or 30 minutes I don’t know but let’s see where they’re at.”

The Norwegian manager has been under immense pressure for the bad start to the season. With so many players injured, he has also been questioned about selling Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in summer, to which he stood by his decision.

“In one-off games, you think we could’ve had a number of extra players with experience,” Solskjaer said. “Alexis and Rom are goalscorers and good players, but at the moment, we made those decisions and they were the right decisions.”
