Retired Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has returned to Chelsea as the club’s Technical and Performance Advisor. The 37-year old played his last professional game in the 4-1 Europa League final defeat against the Blues.

Petr Cech boasts an illustrious career at Chelsea having spent eleven years at Stamford Bridge. The Czech Republic international won four Premier League titles, one Champions League, one Europa League, five FA Cups and three League cups in a glorious, trophy-laden spell at Chelsea before joining the Gunners in 2015.

Cech has now hung up his boots to focus towards a career in management, with his first job being the technical adviser at Chelsea. He will work closely with club director Marina Granovskaia and the rest of the football staff “to provide advice on all football and performance matters throughout the club, as well as embed and facilitate strong links between our men’s and academy teams”.

“I feel very privileged to have this opportunity to join Chelsea again and help create the best possible high-level performance environment to continue the success the club has had over the past 15 years,” Petr Cech said. “I’m looking forward to the new challenge and hope I can use all of my football knowledge and experience to help the team achieve even more success.”

Petr Cech’s arrival has massively increased the likelihood of former player Frank Lampard returning as head coach. The Derby County manager is favourite to take up the vacant job left by Maurizio Sarri, however, Chelsea will have to pay the Championship side a compensation fee of £4m.

The Blues’ all-time top scorer is currently on holiday in France whilst the club are negotiating a deal with Derby. Petr Cech is the first of the many former players being touted to return to Chelsea, including the likes of Didier Drogba and Claude Makelele.

Frank Lampard reportedly asked Drogba to join him at Chelsea as their new striker coach. The Ivory Coast forward is considered as one of Blues’ all-time greats alongside former midfielder Claude Makelele, who is also expected to return to handle the club’s loanees. The Frenchman also quit his managerial role at Belgian club Eupen last week in a move to join Lampard’s backroom staff.

As it stands, Chelsea’s transfer ban means that they cannot sign players for the next two transfer windows. However, Frank Lampard’s arrival, as well as the addition of former players to the backroom roster, could be a massive boost for fans and players at Stamford Bridge.
