PGA of America, on Tuesday, named Jon Rahm as the Player of the Year for the 2021 season. A first for the Spaniard, and he also snagged the Vardon Trophy for the professional with the lowest adjusted scoring average.

Since its inception in 1948, this award is presented every year for excellence by a PGA Tour Professional. A system of points that factor into account the tour wins and rankings helps decide the winner.

Last year, Jon Rahm finished second, a few points behind Justin Thomas. However, with an impressive season this year, he managed to top the list with 75 points. An epitome of consistency, he had 15 top 10 finishes in 22 events and even notched a crucial win at the US Open Championship, which gained him 30 points.

Rahm tied at second with Kevin Na and split 10 victory points at the recently concluded Tour championship. The 26-year-old world number 1 also garnered 20 points for winning the money title of the season.

For the Vardon Trophy, which requires at least 60 complete rounds, Rahm finished with a 69.300 average based on 86 complete rounds. Dustin Johnson followed closely at 69.619 and Louis Oosthuizen finished third.

What’s next for Jon Rahm?

One organization has deemed Rahm worthy of this title, and another could soon follow suit. He has already been nominated for the PGA Tour Player of the year award. The final decision is taken following voting by the members, which is due to close on Friday.

However, with stiff competition from fellow nominees like Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, and Harris English it remains to be seen if Rahm will win his maiden PGA Tour Player of the Year Award.
