As the PlayStation 5 launch nears, more and more details are coming to light. Recently, Sony announced the arrival of the new voice chat feature, which sent ripples across the community. Eventually, they had to respond to the growing player concerns and reassure them that they are not spying on them. Now, the latest announcement on the official blog unveils the PlayStation 5 Media Remote.

Head of Global Partner Development and Relations, Phil Rosenberg, announced this on the PlayStation Blog. He said, “We know that for many of you, your PlayStation console doesn’t get shut off when you’re done playing games. Entertainment like movies, TV shows, music, and gaming livestreams only add to the PlayStation experience. As we continue on our road to PS5 launch, we’re pleased to announce some of the entertainment apps* scheduled to hit the PS5 console on day one, with more apps to come in the future.”

The list of apps includes Spotify, YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, and Twitch. In addition to this, other services like Amazon Prime Video, MyCanal, Hulu, Peacock, and more will also be available soon.

Interestingly, Netflix, Spotify, Disney+, and YouTube have their separate buttons on the media remote. Besides this, Twitch and YouTube apps will allow players to livestream their games directly.

PlayStation 5 will have pre-installed media apps on the system.

Interestingly, players won’t have to download these apps separately. The blog reads “Within the Media space, you’ll no longer need to download entertainment apps through PS Store — it’s all in the Media space. Creating dedicated Game and Media spaces for the PS5 user experience will make it fast and easy to switch between gaming and entertainment content whenever you want. The PS5 console also features a new Control Center that makes controlling your music easier than ever before, so you can quickly switch between channels, skip, and pause your music.”

Recently, the PlayStation 5 UX reveal showcased how the Control Center makes life easier for users. These apps will be able to take complete advantage of the same as well.

Although, if these apps come pre-installed, they are bound to take up some SSD space. The PlayStation 5 already has an 825 GB SSD, which is low compared to the Series X’s 1TB SSD. It will be interesting to see the space allotment on the consoles once the units hit the markets.

Nevertheless, the Media Remote brings a lot of exciting features to the PS5. This will definitely prove to be an important factor for Sony during the launch season.
