PlayStation 5 Sales in the UK Leave Xbox Series X/S in the Dust

The next-generation of gaming kicked off in style, with the launch of Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S. Both these powerhouses bring something different to the table in terms of hardware prowess, features, and design. Even though the pandemic has slowed down the global economy, it hasn’t stopped people from splurging on their favorite brand of consoles. However, it seems that sales for the PlayStation 5 are substantially ahead of the Xbox Series X/S.
According to data provided by GfK, around 900,000 consoles were sold in the UK during November. November is particularly a lucrative time for these console manufacturers considering the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales take place at that time. Although, it seems like the PS5 and Nintendo Switch outsold the Series X/S by a margin.

In a YouTube video, popular gaming channel Inside Gaming posted some additional stats to prove Ps5’s dominance. Apparently, the PS5 dethroned Switch to take the top spot in terms of console sales (in the UK). Additionally, the Japanese market also favored the PS5 over Series X. However, this market has always inclined towards Sony, so it may not be a fair comparison.
But slow Xbox Sales in the UK put a lot into perspective.

In the video, hosts discussed the reason behind the slow Series X sales as compared to the PS5. The conclusion they came to was something everyone knows: Xbox’s lack of exclusives. However, one other reason the console sales were affected for both PS5 and Series X is because of the scalper problem. No one likes hoarders who use any opportunity to reduce supply and increase the prices, which is exactly what happened.

Despite the scalper problem and the obvious logistical issues, the fact remains that the PS5 outsold the Series X. However, this does not mean that Xbox lost the ‘console war’. Xbox’s strategy has changed completely with this generation of consoles, as it is now focused on its Game Pass and xCloud service. PlayStation will still have higher console sales as it has great exclusives (where Xbox obviously lacks), and that is why it is difficult to measure individual success or failure over here.

With the acquisition of Zenimax, Microsoft will have plans to launch great exclusives for Xbox as well. There is still no clarity on the Bethesda games being exclusive to Xbox; however, Sony will definitely have to conjure up something special to counter this move. The ‘console war’ has just begun and there is a long way to go before a winner is declared.
