McLaren legend Alain Prost called Stoffel Vandoorne faster than teammate Fernando Alonso. Prost was referring to the development this year of McLaren rookie Vandoorne. The Frenchman said, “Everyone watched Vandoorne because, prior to coming into F1, he was recognised as one of the most exceptional youngsters for the future. He started at McLaren with reliability problems and never the same equipment as Alonso. But I think Vandoorne is now playing on the same level or even better than Alonso. He’s doing his development in a perfect way.”

Alain continued saying that with a good engine, the team will know if he is efficient and reliable. Being Alonso’s teammate is no easy task, so Vandoorne has to stay calm and take his time. The Renault advisor thinks that there will be no problem for him to be on top in years to come.

Meanwhile, Prost spoke of the 2017 season in general. Renault struggled with the now high levels of technology in F1. He said that Formula One is in a phase of hyper-technology, but it’s normal. Prost admitted that it was the first time the French manufacturer were almost overwhelmed by this technology. But he insists that there are no negatives.

For the 2018 season, Renault will have to get to the bottom of all the reliability issues that plagued the Renault, Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams. They need to, or else, Red Bull will be highly disgruntled and McLaren will have another long year of disappointment. No pressure then! Meanwhile, we can only wait and see if Prost’s predictions will actually come true. Can the Belgian challenge Fernando Alonso? Is Stoffel Vandoorne faster than the Spaniard? There are just so many questions that need to be answered and March 2018 cannot seem to come soon enough.
