Paris St. Germain has been trying to break the glass ceiling in European football for some time now but the French club has failed to make any real headway. Speaking on the topic, captain Thiago Silva said that they must improve as they prepare for life under a new coach.

Speaking to the media, the Brazilian centre-back appeared to quiz the club management’s decision to part ways with manager Unai Emery. According to Silva,”we change coach but we do not progress”.

The Spanish coach was hired in the summer of 2016 to replace Laurent Blanc, but despite regaining the title from surprise winners AS Monaco this season, he had to pay the price for being unable to go past the mighty Real Madrid in the pre-quarterfinals.

According to the 33-year-old pro,”It’s the choice of the club and I think they spoke after the defeat against Real Madrid. This week, they decided he will not stay with us next year but the responsibility is on us now. We change coach but we do not progress. Maybe we at home have to look and think about what we need to do more to improve next year.”

While the statement may seem like an explosive outburst from a player, on closer examination, it reveals the truth. PSG has spent millions on players ever since they came under Qatari management, but they have little to show for it. They have established hegemony in Ligue 1 and domestic football but they have so far failed miserably in Europe.

The likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marco Verrati, Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Neymar have all failed to deliver the results for PSG and even coaches of the caliber of Carlo Ancelotti and the aforementioned Blanc have left over the years. The search for the next manager is on and a number of names have been linked to the job, including Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, Thomas Tuchel, and Mauricio Sarri, the players also need to take a long, hard look at themselves and try to figure out if they have the mentality to produce consistently on the biggest occasions or not.
