The investor of Davis Cup 2019, Gerard Pique stated that Roger Federer perceives the historic tournament as a competitor of his event which is the Laver Cup. World Number three, Roger Federer’s absence from the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid was specifically noted.

“I would like everyone to play but over the time I realized that it’s not a question if he (Roger Federer) likes or not the competition, but personal. He holds another event, the Laver Cup, and he sees Davis Cup as a competition. And that’s not like this. It’s a three-year exhibition against an event that was introduced back in 1900,” said Gerard Pique.

Earlier, Federer responded to Pique’s statements, which jeered at his absence from Davis Cup. The Swiss was touring around Latin America and played a few exhibition matches against Alexander Zverev while the other ATP men were swinging their racquets in Madrid.
