The Formula 1 paddock is currently in Sochi for the Russian Grand Prix 2019 and there have already been numerous bombshells dropped. However, this is Formula 1 and there can never be too many surprises. According to the latest rumours, as per Joe Saward, something big may be coming from the McLaren camp.
The team have already confirmed that Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris are retained for next season. However, there are a number of rumours surrounding the relationship between McLaren and Renault.
Some say that McLaren could reunite with Mercedes and be a customer team for them in the future. Admittedly, McLaren do have a decent relationship with Renault, unlike in their Honda days. However, one has to wonder, when Renault eventually develop into a strong team, will they focus on maintaining their level, or also help McLaren’s resurgence?

It is also worth noting that McLaren’s management structure has also changed significantly. Andreas Seidl took over as team principal, and he has different ideas about how to restore the team to its former glory.

However, as a customer team, McLaren are always at a disadvantage, even if their power units and software are the same. So, it makes more sense for McLaren to switch back to Mercedes engines, as they are more competitive.
In addition to that, the deal could be beneficial to Mercedes as well, especially in terms of political power in F1. It will also positively affect their business and help get some more return on the investments made in its power units. As an added bonus, the German manufacturer will not have to worry about McLaren being a title threat.

However, on the other end of the scale, this rumour could be detrimental for Renault if there is a grain of truth. The French manufacturer will have no customers, who could help them focus on what is required to move up the ladder. For now though, all parties involved, will be focusing on the Russian Grand Prix 2019.
