Going into his first Grand Slam final at US Open 2020, Alexander Zverev had nothing to lose. For many legends and experts, he was the underdog given his opponent was the mighty Dominic Thiem. But few could have predicted such an unparalleled performance from the 23-year-old German. He was in complete control of the match, leading two sets to love, until the beginning of the third set.

Fate, however, had something else in store for him. Dominic Thiem made a comeback and beat Zverev 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(6) to lift his maiden Grand Slam title.

In the press conference after the final, Zverev was asked multiple questions. One of them was about David Ferrer, who is his newly appointed coach in 2020. The question was regarding what all did he manage to learn from the former World no.3 and how did he help him in the tournament and in this match.

Asked what he had managed to learn from Ferrer so far and how it had helped him in the US Open, Sascha answered a bit frustratingly, “I mean, look, I just lost 7-6 in the fifth in a Grand Slam final. David is great. I’ve said it on multiple occasions.

“Yeah, right now, as I said before, I learned a lot from him. Right now I don’t think is the time to talk about that.”

He definitely looked a bit annoyed with the question. Though he respects Ferrer and has learned a lot from him, Zverev certainly felt that it was not the right time to talk about it. He was clearly heartbroken after losing the US Open 2020, especially given the manner of the loss.

But the 23-year-old prodigy has proved to the world what he is capable of. He has raised the bar and set the standard for other young players to follow.
