Sebastian Vettel Ridicules Rumours That Lewis Hamilton is Replacing Him at Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton will be the biggest free agent heading into the 2021 season. The six-time world champion has been linked with a move to Ferrari. The Italian team has admitted that they would consider a move for the Briton should be available in the market. According to rival and friend, Sebastian Vettel jokingly suggested that Hamilton is already a Ferrari driver.

Since 2015, Ferrari have played catch up to Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes team. With major technical changes coming in 2021, it’s not a surety that Mercedes will maintain their dominance in the new era. With Lewis Hamilton turning 36 before the start of the 2021 season, their partnership might end.

After winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, speculation of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel’s future intensified. The fire was lit when Ferrari team principal Matia Binoto said he was happy that the six-time world champion will be on the driver market. Further more, the Briton did not deny that he met Scuderia President,  John Elkann, fueling speculations.

Surprisingly, Toto Wolff has admitted that while the Silver Arrows would love to keep Lewis, he would not stop him from a future move to Ferrari in 2021. Mercedes, which are sending mixed signals about staying in the sport.

When asked about Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari, Sebastian jokingly said

“I think he’s already a Ferrari driver. No? So no change. I think he’s a good customer. He owns more than one.”

Sebastian made light of the conversation. If Lewis were to ever join Scuderia Ferrari, he would be more than likely replacing Sebastian Vettel. The German quadruple world champion had a disastrous season by his high standards. He was out performed by his team mate and crashed several times this year.

Speaking about his own future, Sebastian said

“I was already doing holiday next year, I heard before I’m stopping, I don’t know who was the one [to start the speculation], seems to know more than me, but since you journalists are always right, then it will hit me in the next weeks. I’ve had a couple of mistakes that I shouldn’t make. I have to be honest, obviously in terms of approach, maybe small things I can do. Less interviews will help! It’s all part of the negotiations for next year before any other negotiations.”

Lewis Hamilton on the other hand has not commented much on the future. But it will be interesting to see if Ferrari make a champion swap in 2021. The speculation of the two men who have 10 world championships will dominate talk for the 2020 season
