Serena Williams : “I Feel Insecure as a Mom”

Serena Williams, in a recent press conference in Philadelphia, spoke about being a parent and more. Serena Williams says that she feels very nervous being a parent, and always thinks that she is doing something wrong. “I always have these insecurities that I’m not good enough as a mom”, said Serena Williams. “We all go through these different emotions that we all don’t feel comfortable talking about. But I think we should.”

Serena Williams also spoke about how she has managed to cope with the dificulties of being a black player. She revealed that most of the black people do not prefer tennis as their primary sport. The 23 time Grand slam champion also revealed that her sister Venus Williams helped her a lot through her tough times. “It hasn’t been easy being a black tennis player in a sport that black people typically didn’t play”, said Williams. “There was no manual for that, really. My sister, Venus, obviously came a year before me. She opened so many doors for me and pushed a lot of boundaries.”

Serena also went on to add that black women and mothers in particular were not getting the treatment they deserved in her country. “I did some research and I was alarmed that our black mothers are not being taken care of. It’s in this country that is supposed to be so technologically advanced”, said Serena Williams. “Why are we treating out mothers like this?” It’s really unacceptable. I feel like if I can help save lives – that’s one of the best things that you can do.”

In a recent video, Serena Williams bared her clothes for raising awareness for breast cancer. (Read about it here : Williams strips to create awareness ). “I was like OK, I’m not a singer”, joked Serena. “Anyway, long story short – it’s a great ad. It is amazing what early detection can do. It can change your life. I thought it was really important to do that”, said the American.
