Serena Williams snatches her 22nd Wimbledon Title

Jr. Williams, on Saturday, sealed her name into the books of history as she became the first one in the Open Era to equal Steffi Graff’s career record of 22 Grand Slam titles. Beating the young German Angelique Kerber, Williams has now seven Wimbledon trophies to her name, equaling even Roger Federer’s record.

It comes as a relief for the 34-year old Champion who had been waiting for nearly a year for her 22nd title, a thought even her coach Mouratoglou echoes, saying “I’m relieved to have Serena back. What you saw today, what you saw in the semis and what you saw in the second round; that was Serena. When she was in trouble, boom, boom, she did it. When she needed to close, boom, she did it. That is Serena. I didn’t see that for months.”

While the final was an unnerving encounter for the Grand Slam champion, it was equally competitive for the German, who undoubtedly had a long day. The first set was much too deserving for Kerber, who fought on breaks after multiple deuces with unusual strength and determination. Kerber, who played exceptionally well during the 2nd set again, was cut down by Williams’ serves multiples times and was unable to return her 124 mph speedy serves.

The German, who won her maiden Grand Slam earlier this year, will go into The US Open with much more preparedness and confidence, having learnt Williams’s play in both her wins and losses. “Big congrats to Serena Williams, thank you for your support that makes this so special!” Kerber is a distinguished player whose rapt aptitude towards her competitors is well worthy of her Runner-Ups spot at The Championships this year.
