The 2023 NWSL season kicked off in style, and Alex Morgan and his side are ecstatic after clinching a vital victory. The Waves hosted the opening fixture against the Chicago Red Stars and made an emphatic comeback.

Casey Stoney’s side rallied for a 3-2 win at Snapdragon Stadium, thus stealing three points from Chris Petrucelli’s side. With the win, they share the top spot in the table alongside North Carolina Courage, who clinched a narrow 1-0 lead against Kansas City.

The visitors took the lead with an early goal from Yuki Nagasato. However, they couldn’t maintain their lead as Amirah Ali’s strike leveled the score. Soon, the home side took a lead from Jaeden Shaw.

However, that too was leveled by the Red Stars, as Mallory Swanson leveled the score by striking a penalty. The match was about to end in a draw until the ref pointed to the spot, thus giving Waves a lifeline. Hence, it was Morgan who beautifully struck the penalty.

It was indeed a much-needed win for the Waves, with Alex Morgan slotting it home for her side. The stadium went wild after the skipper clinched the victory. After the win, she posted the video on her Twitter with the caption, “30,854 made this happen. See you next weekend,” as the USWNT star had kind words for her supporters.

“The game was amazing. 30,000 in the stands just kept us going honestly like..ugh it was nice to get the penalty at the end too but just to win in our first game, feels good going into the season. It’s just there’s no better feeling so hopefully, we get 30,000 again next game.”
