When it comes to soccer, arguably, the best rivalry is between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. There is a longstanding debate between the fans over who is superior. However, the fans who support Real Madrid with top athletes always favor the Portuguese. Meanwhile, World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen is an exception to the rule five times. 

Carlsen made a big reveal last year on the Lex Fridman podcast. He told how Los Blancos made him say his favorite player is Ronaldo in an interview. The Norwegian’s favorite Real Madrid player was not even Ronaldo, as he named some other player in an interview.

The four-time World Rapid Chess Champion was on Lex Fridman’s podcast last year in August. As a soccer fan from childhood, the host asked him to weigh on Ronaldo, Messi, Maradona, and Pele. While speaking on Ronaldo and Messi, the Norwegian revealed how his favorite soccer club made him change the answer to the favorite player question in an interview.  

“I went to quite a number of Madrid games and they’ve always been super helpful to me down there. The only thing is that they were going to do an interview, and they were going to ask me who my favorite player was. I said somebody else. I think it was Isco at that point, and they were like, ‘Okay, take two, now you say Ronaldo.’ So for them, it was very important, but it wasn’t that huge to me,” Carlsen said on the podcast.

Carlsen is a childhood soccer fan and is his favorite sport outside of chess. He is a big fan of Spanish giants Real Madrid and keeps attending their games occasionally. However, he is also connected to soccer through Fantasy Premier League and has once finished a respectable 10th in the fantasy season.

Apart from Real Madrid, the player is a big fan of the Premier League. He started playing the fantasy game as a distraction from chess, but now is a big fan of soccer fantasy games, especially Fantasy Premier League (FPL). He was once number one on the FPL rankings and has updated his Twitter bio, mentioning the Former (live) #1 Fantasy Premier League player.
