“On the Level of LeBron James or Derek Jeter”- US Soccer Star Megan Rapinoe Explains Why Big Names Need to Come Out as Gay to Break Stereotypes

Megan Rapinoe is a decorated soccer player for USWNT. We know her for her astonishing career and outspoken nature regarding her beliefs and views. Rapinoe had said some very hard-hitting things when it comes to taking stands and making the world a better place. She was a leading voice in USWNT’s battle against the USA Soccer Association for equal pay.

Her autobiography mentioned several times she had to stand up for herself and her views. Rapinoe also wrote about LeBron James and Derek Jeter on how it could have been beneficial.

Megan Rapinoe was also the leading voice in kneeling during the anthem before matches to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement. She also talked about how big celebrities coming out can break the stereotypes around the LGBTQ+ community.

Megan discusses how celebrities coming out can be beneficial for people. She wrote, “If you’re a prominent athlete, coming out isn’t for yourself but for others. Until everyone can come out without it being a big deal, nobody gets to “just” live their lives. And the more people who come out, the more we break down the stereotypes of what it is to be gay.

While giving an example, she continued, “I would love it, for example, if an athlete on the level of a LeBron James or a Derek Jeter came out. It would mess with the stereotypes about masculinity and femininity, just as if more women on my team came out. I’d hoped it would show there was more than one way to be gay.”

Megan Rapinoe is proud of her relationship with the famous basketball player Sue Bird. She is a major voice for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

The power couple- Rapinoe and Bird 

Megan Rapinoe shares a total of seven Olympic gold medals, with Sue Bird contributing six. They met during the 2016 Rio Olympics and got engaged in 2020. Megan Rapinoe, an advocate of the LGBTQ+ community had come out as gay in 2012, while Sue Bird came out in 2017 when she announced her relationship with Rapinoe.

She stated, “I’m gay. Megan’s my girlfriend. … These aren’t secrets to people who know me..” Megan Rapinoe had a public feud with then president Doland Trump during Black Lives Matter. Sue Bird had publically come to defend her partner and stated the hatred president had for her.
