The husband of tennis legend Serena Williams and co-founder of Reddit is well known in the soccer world for his investment in the NWSL franchise Angel City FC. But is this the only soccer connection Ohanian has? The answer is ‘No.’ He also has an investment in the social media platform specially made for soccer, Gloria. 

It was the intention behind the launching of Gloria, a soccer application, that made Ohanian an early investor. He has always seen soccer as a potential investment avenue and didn’t hesitate when a chance to invest was offered. Gloria aims to be the scouting platform for upcoming soccer players, including women players.

The husband of Serena Williams in search of the next soccer star

Victoire Cogevina and Matias Castello found Gloria in 2018. The aim was to build the world’s most inclusive online soccer community. It intended to let soccer players around the globe share their stuff on the platform. 

The purpose was to serve as a scouting platform where upcoming soccer players can introduce themselves to the world with a focus on women’s soccer. Ohanian is one of the early investors and, while speaking of his investment, shared his thoughts back in 2019.

Reddit co-founder said, “If a startup needs me to wear a tux, I’ll gladly do it. This is a good gig. Gloria is gonna help us discover the next Messi or Rapinoe anywhere in the world – and all they need is talent & access to a smartphone.” The message was simple to all the upcoming soccer players to use the platform to showcase their talents. 

One Football takes over Gloria 

One Football, regarded as one of the largest soccer media platforms, acquired Gloria last year. It was their vision to promote women’s soccer to their current fan base that made them invest in Gloria. Cogevina started Gloria to focus more on women’s soccer, as there was less coverage on social media.

We know Cogevina for her advocacy of women’s soccer and is currently the UN Women’s ambassador for Gender Equality in Soccer. She is also a co-founder of the first female sports agency that represents players in the MLS. For her work, One Football appointed her as a vice president of women’s soccer after the takeover. 

Alexis Ohanian was happy with the decision to the appointment of Cogevina as vice president of women’s soccer. He believes it will help the progress of women’s soccer. He is a fan of the impact Gloria’s founder is having on achieving gender equality in sports.
