Serena Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian have now become popular names in American soccer. In 2020, the celebrity couple gauged a major gap in the American sports industry. But to everyone’s surprise, that gap was for the development of soccer in the US. Ohanian realized that he had found a fantastic business opportunity. He then brought on board several other eminent personalities to discuss the same.

That was when this star-studded group of board members including Serena Williams decided to establish Angel City FC. Angel City FC is a women’s soccer club that competes in the NWSL. However, a year after establishing Angel City FC, Ohanian posted a shocking fact on Twitter.

The Reddit co-founder then went on to question the intention of every US soccer investor.

Why did Ohanian question every US Soccer investor?

Bloomberg.com was once having an exclusive interview with Al Tylis. Al Tylis has been actively investing his money in soccer clubs for a number of years. After investing in soccer clubs like Swansea City and DC United, Tylis was looking for the next opportunity. However, while researching Tylis came across a bizarre fact about the US.

Tylis told Bloomberg, “I saw something a while back that I found relatively shocking: In the U.S. alone, more people watch [Mexican soccer league] Liga MX than Major League Soccer and the Premier League combined. It was just an unbelievable number to me”. Following that, Tylis went looking for a soccer club in Mexico and stumbled upon Club Necaxa.

Alexis Ohanian picked up Tylis’ quote and reposted it on his Twitter. The Reddit co-founder also added, “How are there still US investors sleeping on football?”. Despite multiple signs and alarm bells, Ohanian was basically trying to understand why Americans aren’t investing in American soccer. It’s not like rich people don’t live in America. However, nobody seems interested.

Just as 2022 ended, Sportico.com posted an eye-opening chart. Sportico mapped out America’s ‘Top 100 most watched sports broadcasts’ in 2022. However, the results of this study were shocking. The NBA and MLB surprisingly did not make it to the list at all. Soccer appeared thrice on the list, with the 2022 FIFA World Cup final bagging the 38 spot.

What is Serena Williams’ and the others investor’s goal for Angel City FC?

In 2020, Alexis Ohanian and his group of investors including Serena Williams decided to go against the odds and establish their newly planned soccer franchise. However, before establishing the club it was important for every investor to be in tandem with the long-term objective.

In conversation with LA Times, Ohanian said, “The goal here is not to be the best club in NWSL. The goal is not to be the best women’s professional sports club. He continued, “The goal is not to be the best football club, the goal is to be the best sports franchise in the world. I need the bar to be there because like any start-up we invest in, that’s where it has to be”.
