The BCCI are all set to get a new president as former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly will be taking the responsibility on October 23. He wants Virat Kohli to begin a new phase under his leadership. While praising India’s performance, Ganguly didn’t shy away from pointing out that the India have failed to win a single ICC tournament since 2013.

While talking to the reporters in Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly said that India always “plays well in big tournaments” but now their focus should be the ICC events and to win that. Despite highlighting the team’s failure in knock-out stages, the former captain said he has confidence in the leadership skills of Virat Kohli and backed him as well.

“India is a good team. I know they have not won a big tournament. But they play well in big tournaments except for the semifinals and the final. Hopefully, Virat can change it around. He is a champion player,” he said.

India’s last major tournament win was in a multi-nation tournament in 2013 when MS Dhoni-led India won the title in ICC Champions Trophy in England. Before that, India had won the 50-over World Cup in 2011 under MS Dhoni’s leadership.

Under Kohli’s captaincy, Team India has managed success while playing overseas. However, the players failed to do well in ICC knock-out stages. Under Kohli, India has been knocked out twice — ICC Champions Trophy (2017) and ICC 50-over World Cup (2019) in the United Kingdom also.

India had knocked the 2014 World T20 after losing to Sri Lanka in the final, they also got exited in 2016 World T20 after losing to the West Indies in the semifinal, whereas they lost to their arch-rivals Pakistan in 2017 Champions Trophy. Earlier this year, India’s journey in 2019 ICC World Cup came to an end after they lost to New Zealand in the semifinal.
