Three-time Grand Slam champion, Stan Wawrinka had a regular at his office today. The Swiss star defeated the Belgian, Ruben Bemelmans 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of Wimbledon Championships 2019.

After his round one victory, Wawrinka spoke about the on-going fuss in the ATP Player Council. The ATP men, Robin Haase, coach Daniel Vallverdu, Sergiy Stakhovsky, and Jamie Murray resigned from the council after their Wimbledon meeting.

“We have been seeing this since the beginning of the year,” Stan Wawrinka reflected.  “A lot of stuff is happening, behind and outside the court and a lot of stuff happening politically as well. Recently, it’s been really very messy with people leaving the council and all those things happening.”

Stan Wawrinka believes that issues in the ATP Board will soon be resolved and the tennis officials are trying their best to put everything at place. “I think you have to wait for a little to see, what they really want. The people who are trying to make a change, so far just talk about, making changes because something is wrong and they didn’t mention about what they want to improve or what they want to make better.”

World Number 19, Stan Wawrinka doesn’t really know the loopholes in the council and he is clueless about the tennis professionals stepping down from the council.  “A lot of stuff happened this week as well, but personally, I don’t no any information about all the meeting they had,” he continued.

“So, I’m going to wait a little bit to know everything that happened and what is the reason behind all these people leaving the council to make my comment,” Stan Wawrinka added. He believes that something interesting would happen in the board over the next few months and hopes for a positive consequence.

Up next, the Swiss will play the American, Reilly Opelka in the second round of Wimbledon Championships 2019. Stan Wawrinka has never been beyond the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. He made it to the quarters twice, in 2014, Wawrinka lost to Roger Federer in all-Swiss quarterfinals and in 2015 he lost to Richard Gasquet in a five-set thriller.
