“Still Has Many Goals to Achieve”: Father Says Dominic Thiem’s US Open Win Is Just the Beginning

In 2020, Dominic Thiem achieved a feat, where none of his rivals belonging to his generation have. He became the first man from the new breed of players to lift a grand slam title ever. Thiem lifted the US Open 2020 at the Flushing Meadows in new york.
To be honest, Dominic lifting his first major doesn’t come as a shock. He has worked hard to get where he is at. Prior to the US Open this year, Thiem has made it to a grand slam final on three occasions. The Austrian fell short to Rafa twice (2018, 2019 Roland Garros) and Novak (Australian Open 2020) once.

Recently while chatting with Dominic’s father, Wolfgang Thiem, he explains the brief conversation he had with his son with regard to winning a slam at some point in the future. Wolfgang said, “During the summer, three or four weeks before heading to New York, we were talking about everything and nothing, and he told me “Dad if I do all this, if I work this hard, it’s because I want to win a slam. And a month later, he was winning the US Open. This conversation is a really nice memory.”
However, he doesn’t expect Dominic to change his attitude or approach towards the game, now that he’s won a major. He maintains a similar kind of hunger as he had before the US Open. The senior Thiem also insists that his son is far from done and states that he’s still got a lot left to prove.

His father also stated, “To win a grand slam was one of Dominic’s ultimate goals. But I knew that as soon as he would go back on the court, he was just going to want to win his matches, forget about his title in New York. He’s a competitor, he loves winning, he still has many goals to achieve as a tennis player.”
