Gennady Golovkin will clash against Ryota Murata in a middleweight unification professional boxing match on 9th April 2022. Ahead of the match, let's take a look at five interesting facts about Golovkin.
Golovkin was born in the city of Karaganda in the Kazakh SSR, the Soviet Union, to a Russian father and Korean mother.
According to multiple sources, Golovkin fought an astounding 350 times, before ever turning professional. He lost only five of those fights.
Golovkin has a Twin brother named Max. The latter was an elite amateur boxer in his day. Max and Gennadiy are very close to this day, as the former helps his brother in training camps and is always in his corner on fight night.
Other than Max, Golovkin had two older brothers, Sergey and Vadim, who encouraged him to pursue boxing. However, they were unable to witness their younger brother reach the pinnacle of the sport, as both passed away while serving in the Russian army when Golovkin was a teenager.
Golovkin is said to have one of the most durable chins in boxing history, having never been knocked down or otherwise stopped in a total of 393 fights, 43 as a professional and 350 as an amateur.
