What does Rory McIlroy think about the end of the WGC Match Play?
Match Play tournaments have been part of the PGA Tour’s schedule since 1999.
And it was the same year when the World Golf Championships took birth. Ever since then, the tournament has been of great value in the eyes of all golf fans. However, the PGA Tour has now decided to discontinue the tournament for the upcoming 2023 schedule.
What did Jay Monahan say regarding the end of WGC Match Play?
The WGC Match Play tournament is not a good fit for the upcoming year on the Tour.
“For next season’s schedule, it didn’t work…But match play has been a staple out here. It’s been a staple of the DP World Tour. That will certainly be a consideration as we go forward,” Monahan said in his statements.
However, like all his fans, World No. 2, Rory McIlroy, is also unhappy with the Tour’s decision.
He recently broke his silence about what he thinks about the cancellation of match play events for next year.
He said, “Hopefully it’s not in the rearview mirror for too long. It’s not on the schedule for 2024, but that’s not to say that it won’t be on the schedule for 2025.”
McIlroy had more to add.
McIlroy continued with his take on the situation and even called out the PGA Tour for their decision in a rather bold manner.
He said, “Match play is the purest form of the game and for the biggest tour in the world not to play a match play event would be a real shame.” It is visible how much the tournament means to McIrloy.
