Cheyenne used to believe that it was best if she remained silent and did not speak out. But she quickly realised she couldn’t just stand by. Woods now uses her second name and the status she’s earned for herself to speak out against racism and inequality. She understands the negative impact of doing so as well.
She once said, in a podcast, “You’re going to get the backlash. You’re going to get the comments and the negativity.” She lashed out at those hating on her and said, “I don’t care if you like what I say or not. I truly believe that this is what’s right and it’s in my heart.”
She stood her ground and said, “And if I lose, as I have, thousands of followers because I’m speaking up about what I believe is important and right in the world, I don’t care if you unfollow me. I don’t care if you don’t support me.” Cheyenne is certain she is doing the right thing, and she is ready to take it all on alone if she has to.
She has done all she can to avoid her uncle’s shadow. But she also knows that his name and golf will always be used as synonyms. And Cheyenne claims that if just the legend’s last name gets more people to watch women’s golf to see how “Tiger’s niece” is playing, then she happily welcomes it. She uses the name to be more outspoken about the diversity and equality needed in the game.
