The DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour, officials have once fined the 15-time major champion for spitting in one of its events! The camera caught Woods spitting on the 12th green on the final round of the 2011 Dubai Desert Classic. And he was fined by the tournament officials for an amount undisclosed.
“It doesn’t get much lower than that,” said one of the commentators. Moreover, according to reports, they described Woods as “arrogant and petulant” after watching him spit on the green at the Emirates golf club.
“The Euro Tour is right… It was inconsiderate to spit like that,” Woods reportedly wrote on Twitter. “And I know better,” he added. “Just wasn’t thinking and want to say I’m sorry.”
Notably, the USGA and the PGA Tour do not have any rules against spitting on green or similar actions. However, the golf etiquette section states that “all players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times.”
The Ryder Cup veteran Sergio Garcia had once faced criticism for spitting on the golf course during the 2007 CA Championship. Unlike Woods, the Spaniard didn’t spit on the green but in the hole! Interestingly, the tournament officials didn’t punish him for the same.
