Legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently expressed his concerns about the quality of short-track racing, particularly with the Next Gen car, despite the successful return of North Wilkesboro Speedway.
Revival of North Wilkesboro Speedway
After being abandoned for 27 years, the iconic North Wilkesboro Speedway made a comeback by hosting the NASCAR All-Star race this season. Dale Jr. and his team undertook the project in 2019 to restore the speedway, which was overtaken by decay and weeds. However, Their efforts paid off when the speedway hosted the All-Star race, rekindling its spirit.
Concerns Over Short-Track Racing
Despite the successful revival, concerns emerged regarding the quality of short-track racing. Earnhardt Jr. stated, "NASCAR has a serious problem with the Next Gen Car at the short tracks, any short tracks."
Earnhardt Jr. urged NASCAR to address these issues, expressing his concern about how long North Wilkesboro can sustain with subpar racing experience. He said, "We got to fix the product. How long can North Wilkesboro hang on?"
