Dale Earnhardt Jr. Blames Indy Cars for the Absence of Indianapolis From NASCAR.
NASCAR
NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently shared his perspective on a significant twist in NASCAR’s journey. He believes that the pursuit of success by following IndyCar’s formula might have inadvertently led to the absence of the iconic Indianapolis Oval from the NASCAR calendar.
The IndyCar Influence
Earnhardt Jr. highlighted how NASCAR took cues from IndyCar, aiming to emulate the draft-overtaking on the straights as seen in IndyCar¹. By altering the horsepower of Cup Series cars and introducing larger spoilers, NASCAR aimed to replicate the strategy.
The Impact on Racing
However, in Dale Jr’s eyes, this move led to what he described as “worse” racing, ultimately contributing to the removal of the Indianapolis Oval Brickyard 400 from the roster. He explained that NASCAR was trying to make the cars just draft past each other on every straightaway.
According to Earnhardt Jr., this strategy not only made racing worse but also led to NASCAR bailing on the Indy Oval track altogether. He expressed disappointment over this development, considering how fortunate they were to have such an iconic track on their schedule.
