Hailie Deegan Admits Privileged Training as Tony Stewart’s Series Taught Her a Lesson at Berlin

NASCAR

Hailie Deegan, the 22-year-old Truck Series driver, had a strong performance at the Berlin Raceway, finishing in fifth place. This was a relief for her after having to bow out of the race after getting tangled in Paul Tracy’s crash last week.

The Importance of Tire Management

Deegan spoke to Frontstretch about one of the essential aspects of racing at Berlin Raceway, which can hurt one’s chances at the track if not taken care of. The raceway is infamous for its dry roads that wear out the tires at an incredible rate. Deegan said that the venue lived up to its reputation, and racing in Tony Stewart’s series has made her aware of drivers’ hardships.

 Deegan's Performance

Deegan managed to effectively use her new set of tires, moving up the track alongside Marco Andretti. Her run up into the race was quite solid as well, with a third-place finish in the second heat race. The second heat race was shortened by rain and Deegan ensured not to lose her position back to Stewart-Haas Racing driver Kevin Harvick.

Learning from Veterans

Deegan said that overall, the night had really taught her a lot about tire management. Tire management is one of the most important areas to focus on for a team. For example, an incredible display of tire management helped Kyle Larson win the championship in 2021. Deegan revealed that she learned a lot from the other veteran guys around her and had some hard racing and it was fun.
