How a Former Cup Champion Created History With a Banned NASCAR Car in 1971?

NASCAR

Bobby Isaac became one of the legendary NASCAR drivers in the early 70s. Although he started his career as a full-time driver in 1956, it took him a while to make a name for himself.

Then, he entered his name into the history books forever by setting some incredible records with a banned NASCAR car.

Bobby Isaac’s career

Isaac started his career mainly as a dirt track driver. From there, he won his first NASCAR Cup Series title in 1970, driving the #71 Dodge Charger Daytona. In that season, he won 11 races. Moreover, he still holds the record for winning the most poles (20) in a single season. In his Cup Series career, he won 37 races. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1977 at the age of 45.

NASCAR banned Isaac’s car in 1971

Isaac’s 1969 Dodge Daytona car was one of the fastest cars NASCAR had ever seen. It was more famous for its extreme looks, with a big nose cone and a massive wing in the rear. Unfortunately for him, NASCAR banned the car for the 1971 season. However, it did not break him down, as he tried something completely new, which will remain in the history books forever.

Isaac created a world record

Isaac’s crew chief, Harry Hyde, who built that Dodge Daytona car, went with Isaac to Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, trying to create something new. Indeed, they did, as they created 28 world speed records. Isaac ran 216 miles an hour, which was insane for a stock-bodied car running with a carburetor. Interestingly, speeds haven’t increased that much in NASCAR since then, which is still incredible.
