WNBA Star Brittney Griner Gets Birthday Wishes From Stephen Curry, Ja Morant, And Other Stars As She Turns 32

The basketball community never forgets as the Golden State Warriors reminded fans ahead of the start of the new season. Interestingly, the 18th of October not only marks the start of the NBA’s 2022–2023 season, but it also happens to be WNBA star Brittney Griner’s birthday. Stephen Curry spoke out in support of Brittney Griner and wished her a happy birthday. Notably, the ceremony took place ahead of the Warriors’ season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner turned 32 today. Griner plays in the WNBA for the Phoenix Mercury and for Russia’s UMMC Ekaterinburg during the off-season. In February this year, Griner was detained on drug possession charges in Russia, where she has since been detained for the past 243 days. Furthermore, she was subsequently sentenced to nine years in prison. Ever since her arrest; the NBA, the WNBA, and the wider sporting community have shown their support for the eight-time WNBA All-Star.

During the Golden State Warriors‘ ring ceremony, the fans and players enjoyed the moment to celebrate their fourth title in the past eight years. In between, Stephen Curry took the microphone and went on to share his views about Brittney Griner. Curry said, “We want to continue to use our platform and the opportunity to shout out a very special member of the basketball community. Brittney Griner’s birthday is today, she’s 32.’

A message was posted by Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant on Griner's birthday: "Free BG."

Others in the sports world have tweeted their thoughts about Griner's situation, including Billie Jean King and Breanna Stewart.
