Russell Wilson traded to Broncos: Seahawks agree to blockbuster move that will send superstar QB to Denver

The era of Russell Wilson is over for the Seattle Seahawks. On Tuesday, the team agreed to trade Wilson to the Denver Broncos, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora confirms, after what is being reported as weeks of negotiations between the two sides.

About the trade

The Seattle Seahawks agreed on a trade to send Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos for a trade package that includes quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, two first-round picks, two seconds and a fifth, a source confirmed to The Athletic on Tuesday.

About Russell Wilson

Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowler, having played in two Super Bowls with a win in Super Bowl XLVIII. Wilson threw for 3,113 yards on 64.8 percent passing with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions while missing three games because of a finger injury in 2021. He holds 23 Seahawks passing records and Seattle made the playoffs eight times in his 10 years as the team's starter.

Why Wilson was traded

The general belief is Wilson was ultimately traded because it was an AFC team that finally obliged with a strong enough proposal, which only happened after the Broncos recognized Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t be available earlier Tuesday when he committed to Green Bay for an 18th season.

The possible reasons for Wilson to move

It was an eye-opener for two reasons. First, the Broncos paid a hefty price. And second, teams had been inquiring about Wilson’s availability — a few even made strong offers, according to sources — but the Seahawks continued to insist that he wouldn’t be moved.
