Heading 1

Many memorable horses have bestowed horse racing with a lasting legacy. These four-legged creatures have managed to distinguish themselves from the rest through their skill and endurance. Follow the story to learn about five such horses.

Secretariat

Nicknamed 'Big Red', the stallion foaled in 1970 won all three triple crown races and established a record of 31 lengths at the Belmont Stakes, a record that still holds today. He was named American Horse of the Year in 1972 and 1973 and achieved victory in the Marlboro Cup in a record time.

Man o’ War

The stallion, born in 1917, lived up to his namesake, a British naval ship, by overcoming odds with a temperament rarely found. He won twenty of his twenty-one career races. However, he didn't participate in triple crown races due to the owner's reluctance.

Seattle Slew

Until 2018, the horse born in 1974 was the only one to win all three Triple Crown races without a prior loss. He consecutively held the titles of champion juvenile, three-year-old, and older male horse from 1976 to 1978. Battling a life-threatening illness, he made a stylish return and came within two-fifths of a second from breaking the world record at the Marlboro Cup.

Winx

The mare born in 2011 holds the record for 25 grade or group 1 race victories. While still in training, she became the third horse in history to be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. She also holds the record for winning four consecutive Cox Plate races at Moonee Valley.

Kelso

The gelding born in 1957 had surprising longevity and achieved true greatness when he was conferred with the title of American Champion three-year-old, despite not running in triple crown races. He was named American Racehorse of the Year for a record five consecutive years from 1960 to 1964.
