Serena Williams is a fierce competitor on the tennis court. She leaves no stones unturned to overcome her opponents. While the American legend has attained massive success in her tennis career, she has had some infamous incidents during her matches. One such incident occurred during the quarterfinals of the 2004 US Open.
Serena Williams on her infamous match against Jennifer Capriati.
As Serena served at deuce midway through the match, she hit a backhand shot that according to many, was clearly in. However, to everyone’s surprise, the chair umpire, Mariana Alves, overturned the linesperson’s call and gifted the point to Capriati.
Serena expressed her feelings about the call.
Serena expressed her anger at the chair umpire’s decision and later revealed how she was “cheated and robbed.”
What Serena Said after the match.
Serena went on to say, “At first I thought it was another Wimbledon conspiracy. I thought [Alves] just got the score wrong, and I wanted to clarify that I had won the point because I know my shots and I saw the ball. And I knew it was in."
Serena set to return to the tennis court next week.
Williams announced her comeback after a lengthy injury layoff. Serena will play doubles with Ons Jabeur of Tunisia at the next week’s Eastbourne International.
