Venus Williams opened up on many aspects of her life. One of the things she talked about was her rivalry with her sister, Serena Williams.

In an online interview with Nelson Boyce,

What happened during the US Open 1999?

They both reached the semifinal of the 1999 US Open final. Serena faced Lindsay Davenport and Venus faced Martina Hingis. Serena prevailed and went on the win the final. However, Venus lost her match. As per Queen V, she was too nervous and too doubtful. Venus was 19 and Serena had turned 17.

The two have fought in many grand slams in the finals rounds.

Venus recalled about the US Open 1999.

“One of my biggest losses was definitely one of my biggest lessons. And that was way back in the 90s,” Venus recalled.

Venus had more to add.

“I just turned 19. And then Serena and I are both in the US Open finals. You can imagine I just turned 19, she’s 17 years old, we’re just kids. We’re both in the semi-finals and I just remember being unable to handle the moment just too nervous, just too doubtful.”

Venus added that she faltered quite a bit before and during the match while Serena went on to win the Slam.

“And faltering. And she went on to win that semi-final and win the tournament, as you know, 17-year-old, it was amazing. But that was a horrible loss for me, because, of course, I wanted to be the first Williams final and to be the weakest link. There was not the best feeling in the world.”

Although the loss was crushing, she became even more motivated to train hard and show her own glory to the world.

“So that loss really crushed me. But it also really motivated me to say I’m going to do whatever it takes to be great.”
