Andre Russell Biography
Jamaican powerhouse Andre Russell burst onto the scene in the 2011 World Cup. He raised plenty of appraising eyebrows in his first few games.
After a shaky start following the World Cup, he came into his own against India. In the fourth match of the ODI series, he contributed with the willow and three wickets as a bonus to defeat the Men in Blue. In the next match of the series, he sealed the Man of the Match award.
During that time, Russell was touted as one of the next generation Windies star. He even drew the attention of the legendary Sir Vivian Richards.
Then, a big blow was dealt for Andre Russell when he was embroiled in a doping controversy. The Jamaica anti-doping commission charged him for failure to report his whereabouts. As it turned out, he violated that clause at least thrice. This put him out of contention for the national team. To make matters worse, he pleaded guilty to the panel handling the investigation and was slapped with a one-year ban.
Andre Russell was first picked up by the Delhi Daredevils for a hefty sum of 450,000 USD. However, it was not the dream IPL debut season for poor Russell. Limited game time and injuries scuppered his chances of unleashing his potential in 2012 and 2013.
Then, from 2014 onwards, Lady Luck finally smiled on the man. To start things off, the Kolkata Knight Riders acquired his services. However, in terms of game time it was status quo once again as he competed in a couple of games.
But in 2015, Andre Russell featured more and more prominently and he was even Man of the Match on three occasions. Three half centuries took his run tally to 326 runs at a strike-rate of 192. His bowling skills were also on point, if 14 wickets was any proof.
After his one year ban, Andre Russell need just two games in the 2018 edition to get back in the groove. A blistering 36-ball 88 including 11 sixes and a four was a sight to see. Though that game went in vain, Andre Russell ended the season with 13 wickets and 316 runs.
IPL 2019 Expectations
Beyond a reasonable doubt, when on song, Andre Russell is devastating. The 30-year old can give bowlers nightmares and can even be the bane of batsmen. Skipper Dinesh Karthik will definitely be counting on Russell to deliver.
