Born on 8 June 1983, in a small town in northeastern Belgium, on Clijsters' fifth birthday, her father built a clay tennis court at their home as a gift to his daughter. She was extremely energetic as a kid and held her first racquet at the age of five.

Her father was a soccer player who represented Belgium and her mother was a gymnast, but Clijsters is known as a four-time Grand Slam champion.

Internationally, on the junior circuit, Kim Clijsters had a successful run and she stepped on the WTA circuit at the age of 14 in 1997. She won her first WTA title in 1999 at Luxembourg Open.

During French Open 2001, Clijsters became the first Belgian to contest a Grand Slam singles final, and over there she lost to Jennifer Capriati with 12?10 scoreline in the deciding set. The match was recognized as the greatest French Open women's final in Open Era?history.

In 2003, Clijsters turned World Number one in both singles and doubles and simultaneously dwelled on both the pinnacles. After being hit with injuries, she finally made a Grand Slam breakthrough at?US Open 2005.

After her two-year maternity hiatus from tennis, Clijsters made a winning return to the professional track and turned out to be a champion in 2009 and 2010 at Flushing Meadows. In 2009, she became the third mother to lift a Grand Slam title in the Open Era of tennis.

Soon after her US Open 2010 title, Clijsters picked up the subsequent Grand Slam at Australian Open 2011 by defeating Li Na in finals.
