Shreyas Gopal Biography
Shreyas Gopal is an all-rounder hailing from Karnataka. He primarily bats right-handed and is a leg break bowler. So far, he has never had a tryst with the national side. However, he has had plenty of experience in the Ranji Trophy.
Although he is an all-rounder, gradually his bowling became much more pronounced. He debuted during the 2013-14 Ranji season and showed promise in his batting skills.
However, Shreyas Gopal’s bowling was often the talk of the town. His contributions resulted in Karnataka winning the title.
Since then, there hasn’t been any looking back for the young man who has shouldered a big burden of the spin duties. Blessed with the ability to extract prodigious turn, his multiple skills make him a fine product to have, especially in white-ball cricket.
Gopal’s heroics in the 2013-14 Ranji season saw him getting an IPL contract with the Mumbai Indians but barely played any games for the franchise before moving to the Rajasthan Royals after the 2018 auctions. Gopal has modelled his action on the legendary Anil Kumble although the veteran must be proud of the revs that Gopal imparts on the ball, thereby getting it to spin considerably. There is no denying his skill levels but it’s about taking his career to the next level for a national call up to happen. Only time will tell if he can make that happen or not.
Shreyas Gopal’s IPL career kicked off in 2014 when he played for the Mumbai Indians. He remained with the ‘paltan’ until the 2017 season, but was rarely off the bench in those four years.
A year later, he was roped in by the Rajasthan Royals and he got a larger presence on the field.
The Karnataka native impressed with his leg spin, scalping wickets while staying economical. The Rajasthan Royals normally unleashed him for home games at Jaipur. This was because the pitch normally favours spin.
Gopal’s time in the spotlight came against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He nabbed a 4-fer, pushing the Royals into the playoffs.
IPL 2019 Expectations
Shreyas Gopal’s IPL record consists of 24 wickets in his entire career. He also boasts of an average economy of 7.35 and best figures of 4/16. Shreyas Gopal will surely be a valuable asset for the Rajasthan Royals.
