The final Grand Slam of the year, United States Open Tennis Championships gets underway in the Big Apple, New York City. The US Open 2020 will be the 140th edition of the tournament.

The event will be taking place under unplayable situations as the city of New York has been one of the epic centers of coronavirus. Also, the COVID-19 cases in the US are escalating.

Is the 2020 US Open Cancelled?

The 2020 edition of the tournament will be held under the blanket of coronavirus pandemic. The event issued no statements about canceling it. USTA has been stern with their decision to go ahead with the tournament, also New York's mayor has announced US Open will take place.

The only major change this year will be, the event will take place behind closed doors, i.e., the audience will not be allowed in the sporting arena. Also, the players have to abide by strict rules and regulations laid down by the organizing committee.

Will the US Open be held in 2020?

Yes, it will be held as per the schedule. However, there are chances that the event might be called off at the end moment if New York's mayor announces the situations are unplayable.

US Open 2020 defending champions

In the men’s domain World Number two Rafael Nadal is the defending champion, but he might not present at the tournament since he has committed to play Madrid Open, which starts one day after the conclusion of the US Open.

On the women’s side, Bianca Andreescu will be the defending champion in New York.

Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka are women’s doubles defending champions. Colombians Robert Farah and  Juan Sebastián Cabal are defending champions on the men’s doubles track.

The Brit-American pair Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray held the US Open crown in 2019 in the mixed doubles category.

Where would the 2020 US Open be held?

As usual, the tournament will be held at Flushing Meadows, also this year Cincinnati Open will be held on the same site a week before the commencement of the US Open.

US Open 2020 Prize Money

The total prize money for US Open is $57 million, which makes it the richest Grand Slam tennis tournament in history.  The men’s and women’s singles champion will receive a check of $3.85 million and the runners-up will collect a cheque of $1.9 million.

US Open 2020 Schedule

The tournament is set to get underway on August 31, 2020, and the matches will be concluded on September 11, 2020. The tennis matches will begin at 11 AM (Eastern Time). Since the US Open is well-equipped with floodlights, the night session matches are also carried out.

Usually, the US Open takes place during the last week of August and the first week of September. In 2020, the event was scheduled one week later than its regular schedule due to the previously scheduled Tokyo Olympics.

Also, right after its conclusion, the French Open will start in two weeks' time in Paris. Consequently, the US Major will lose out on players as they considering playing in the French Major instead of the Open.
