Teenager Amanda Anisimova Stuns Simona Halep at the French Open 2019

Amanda Anisimova stuns defending champion Simona Halep 6-2, 6-4 in 1 hour and 8 minutes to reach the semifinals of the French Open 2019 on Thursday. This victory came out to be the biggest victory of the teenager’s career. The match between Simona Halep and Amanda Anisimova was rescheduled today after the play was suspended on Wednesday due to rain.

The defending champion, Simona Halep began her French Open 2019 campaign sluggishly. However, the Romanian has been unstoppable in the last couple of matches before coming to the quarterfinals. She lost only 4 sets in the last two rounds.

While the 17-year-old Amanda Anisimova showed her capability at the Australian Open 2019 as she reached the fourth round of the first major of the season. Anisimova has been quite impressive so far at the Roland Garros 2019. She didn’t lose a single set en route to the quarterfinals on the Parisian clay. She came into the match with the aim of winning the biggest match of her career.

The first set looked like an equal one until the 6th game when Amanda Anisimova broke Simona Halep’s serve to get a lead of 4-2 in the first set. Simona Halep earned a break point opportunity in the very next game to come back into the set. However, she couldn’t capitalize onto it and lost the game.

Amanda Anisimova was looking unplayable for the defending champion as the 17-year-old American got a double break in the 8th game of the set as she won the first set 6-2.

Anisimova took the momentum in the second set as she broke Halep’s serve early in the set. Amanda Anisimova won 9 consecutive games until the 4th game of the second set when Simona Halep finally held her serve for only the third time in the match.

While Anisimova was holding her serve quite comfortably, world no. 3, Halep was struggling to stay in the match. However, Halep finally found her way to break back Anisimova at 4-3 to stay in the match. However, it was Anisimova who broke back as Simona Halep was serving to stay in the set at 5-4. Anisimova won the set 6-4 and defeated the world no. 3, Simona Halep to reach the first semi-final of a grand slam.
